What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis has long been associated with the strange and mysterious, with side shows and faith healers. But the truth is that hypnosis is not the least bit mysterious nor is it difficult to learn and master.

I would define hypnosis as a state of guided sleep known as the hypnotic trance' where the subject retains awareness of the surroundings and responds to suggestions put during the trance state.

Marmer described hypnosis as a psycho-physiological tetrad of altered consciousness:

  1. Narrowed awareness
  2. Restricted but focused attentiveness
  3. Selective wakefulness, and;
  4. Heightened suggestibility.

Hypnosis, thus, shows 3 specific characteristics:

  1. An increased concentration of the mind
  2. An increased relaxation of the body
  3. An increased susceptibility to suggestion.

1. Increased concentration of mind: Usually in the wakeful state, our units of mind power' are scattered throughout the brain. Any extraneous suggestions during this stage will go scattered throughout and will be captured only by a few mind power units. In the hypnotic state, these units of mind power are concentrated to a point that the suggestions get absorbed and retained easier.

2. Increased relaxation of the body: Popular hypnotic induction involves the progressive muscular relaxation techniques, whereby muscle groups are tensed and relaxed gradually to achieve a fully relaxed body and mind.

3. Increased susceptibility to suggestion: This is the outcome of the preceding 2 phenomena, the concentration of mind and the relaxed body. The mind, which is in a twilight zone between the wakefulness and sleep, is highly receptive to suggestions during the hypnotic state.

In hypnotherapy, once in this state, called a hypnotic trance, patients are given therapeutic suggestions to encourage changes in behaviour or relief of symptoms. For example, in a treatment to stop smoking a hypnosis practitioner might suggest that the patient will no longer find smoking pleasurable or necessary. Further positive suggestion of feeling of well being after stoppage of the unwanted habit will bolster the suggestions. Hypnosis for a patient with rheumatoid arthritis might include a suggestion that the pain can be turned down like the volume of a radio whenever the patient wants to.

Research in the field of psycho-neuro-immunology has opened up exciting avenues as to how hypnosis, along with biofeedback and relaxation techniques, can benefit the patients in a vast array of illnesses linking mind and the body .

The trance state may be induced by various means like guided imagery, progressive muscular relaxation, deep breathing, meditation , self-hypnosis, or other hypnotic induction techniques. Individuals vary in their ability to enter into the hypnotic trance state. It has been suggested that 70-80 % of people are hypnotizable to some extend. The feeble minded or psychotic persons cannot be put under hypnotic trance, for the simple reason that they are unable to concentrate for any length of time. Also people who consciously resist attempts to hypnotize cannot be hypnotized.

Attributes of Your Conscious and Subconscious Minds

Have you ever wondered where some of the little pop-ups in your mind come from?

Things you have not thought about for years, or you had forgotten about, and all of a sudden, they appear in your thoughts, in your consciousness. This is when your subconscious mind feels you either need some inner inspiration, or that you are now ready to handle and let go of something that happened in your past which is causing a current behaviour or decision-making process.

Remember in the NLP Presuppositions, the one that says that you have all the resources you need to achieve anything you want? That's what is happening. Information you either need at that moment or will need in the future is surfacing.Your subconscious mind is a reservoir of limitless knowledge, behaviours and skills, and, sadly, many people don't make use of these gifts. Let's have a look at the different functions of the subconscious mind and the conscious mind.

The Conscious Mind

The conscious mind operates volitionally, that is, its thinking and resultant behaviours are deliberate

It

o sets goals and is outcomes-based

o judges

o needs to find a reason for doing something

o is linear, operating on cause and effect

o purposefully seeks answers

o thinks abstractly

o is sequential

o likes logical order

o deliberately moves your body parts

o is verbal

o Learning is deliberate, and

o The facts have to make sense

It is time bound as it operates in the present

o It is responsible for your present-based self-talk

o It is only aware of now, and

It has limited processing capacity, that is o It has a short-term memory span, approximately 2 seconds, unless pushed

o It can deal satisfactorily with only 1-3 events at a time

o It can only process 5 plus or minus 2 chunks of information at any one time, and

o It averages 2,000 bits of information per second

The Subconscious Mind

The subconscious mind is habitual

o On an unconscious level, it monitors the operation of the body, for example, the motor functions, heart rate, digestion, etc

o It thinks literally, not having the power to reason and analyse.

o It operates intuitively

o Things need to feel right, and

o It forms associations and connections between feelings, thoughts and ideas

It is timeless, in time and space

o It understands only the present time, using 'past' learning experiences to perform 'current' functions, such as, walking, talking, driving a car, etc

o It cannot distinguish between thoughts that are created by external events (reality) or imaginary events

It has expanded processing capacity

o Long-term memory of past experiences, values, beliefs, attitudes

o Can recall and process thousands of events at a time

o It can multi-task

o It knows and has all the answers

o It is non-verbal, preferring pictures

o It makes use of experiential learning, and

o Averages processing over 10,000,000 bits of information per second

In short, the conscious mind has limited focus, the subconscious mind has unlimited focus. Fortunately, your conscious mind and your subconscious mind work as a team and, when they work congruently with each other, provide you with the means to lead an empowered life.
